The Big Day – Flying to Beijing

Ok, travel days are never fun, but wow, this was a long one. My flight from San Jose was delayed, so I spent a few hours fretting at work about what time to leave for the airport.  I have zero chill. Finally, it was time to leave for the airport.

Now, I had to pack 3 weeks worth of winter clothes into a carry-on size bag, so I *thought* it would be a great idea to wear the bulkier items so they didn’t take up so much space, as my suitcase is jam-packed as-is. Well, it isn’t so cold in San Jose, so spending a few extra hours in my sweater dress and fur-lined boots was unpleasant. Getting through the security line at the airport was also unpleasantly hot, and I had to wear my coat to get through without it being my ‘personal’ item.

Anyway, I made it onto the plane. This was the most baller flight I have ever been on. I was in the front row of economy class, with all the extra legroom my tiny legs can handle, and there was no one in the middle seat. The guy on the aisle was super nice, spoke Chinese, helped me order food at dinner time. He set up the flight tracker on the middle seat’s video screen and we used the middle seat to store things, kept the middle tray table up for our drinks. It was pretty sweet.

If you want, go watch the Hainan airlines Tea Pets pre-flight safety video. Painfully cute. I watched a Russian movie called Petersburg Selfie. It was exactly the sort of ennui-filled thing I would watch at home. And then I tried to just deal with being on a plane for 13 hours.

But now I have landed, the tour company’s pick-up service has dropped me at my hotel, I have walked to McDonalds because it’s late at night and nothing is open and I also love McDonald’s.

I had a few moments of panic in the car when, in my exhausted delirium I had no idea what day it was and thought I had missed one of the things I signed up for because I put the wrong day. But I did not and everything is fine and now I’m going to bed.
